Writer, director, and star Angelina Jolie Pitt’s drama By the Sea will make its world premiere Nov. 5 as the opening film of AFI Fest, organizers have announced.

Reuniting Jolie Pitt and husband Brad Pitt on screen for the first time in a decade, By the Sea follows an American writer and his wife as they arrive in a picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France with their marriage on the rocks. Jolie Pitt has said the film, her directorial follow-up to Unbroken, is inspired by European cinema and theater of the ’60s and ’70s.

AFI chief Bob Gazzale said in a statement, “Time and again, Angelina Jolie Pitt has proven herself an artist of the highest caliber. It is an honor for AFI to celebrate her latest story with its world premiere — and in doing so — to shine a proper light upon her boundless creative energies as actor, director, writer, and producer.”

Jolie Pitt added that “AFI has long supported the boldness and experimentation that accompanies provocative cinema.”

The 29th AFI Fest runs Nov. 5-12 in Hollywood. Last year J.C. Chandor’s crime drama A Most Violent Year opened the festival.

Universal Pictures will release By the Sea on Nov. 13.

Would you expect anything less than arresting beauty from a film starring Angelina Jolie Pitt and Brad Pitt? But the actress, who also wrote and directed this film about an estranged married couple struggling with grief, says that setting By the Sea in the 1970s wasn’t without its aesthetic challenges. “It makes me happy when people say the movie looks period but also beautiful,” she says. “I was little in the ’70s, and to see our old pictures, well…” She laughs. “It was not great.”

Filming took place in Malta last August, with the quiet island of Goza standing in for seaside France. Cinematographer Christian Berger (The White Ribbon) kept the look of the production as realistic as possible. “It’s all natural light so it doesn’t feel artificial,” Jolie Pitt says. “When we did scenes, we didn’t have big lighting setups in our face for close-ups.” That stripped-down intimacy helped with some of the film’s heavier moments. “We watch this couple go off the track and we wait to see if it gets more unhealthy, or if they will recover,” she says. “I think too often people go through very painful transformative experiences and they don’t stay together. They abandon each other.”

The reverse was true for the newly wedded stars — who worked on the film during their honeymoon — though it certainly wasn’t without its darker moments. “It was an emotionally charged set,” Jolie Pitt says. “Even though the characters are very different from us, when you act you still express real emotion.” Luckily, the couple’s six kids were on hand to ground them. “It’s impossible to bring your work home with you when you have to snap out of it for your children,” she says. “It wasn’t easy for either of us, but when we walked away, we were closer than we had been.”

By the Sea opens Nov. 13.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in By The Sea

Universal Pictures today announced that it will release By the Sea, Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie Pitt’s directorial follow-up to the studio’s Unbroken, on November 13, 2015, domestically. International releases for the film will build around this date.

Written, directed and produced by Jolie Pitt, the dramatic film stars Brad Pitt and Jolie Pitt, who are supported by an international ensemble led by Mélanie Laurent, Niels Arestrup, Melvil Poupaud and Richard Bohringer.

By the Sea follows an American writer named Roland (Pitt) and his wife, Vanessa (Jolie Pitt), who arrive in a tranquil and picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France, their marriage in apparent crisis. As they spend time with fellow travelers, including young newlyweds Lea (Laurent) and François (Poupaud), and village locals Michel (Arestrup) and Patrice (Bohringer), the couple begins to come to terms with unresolved issues in their own lives.

In its style, and its treatment of themes of the human experience,By the Sea is inspired by European cinema and theater of the ’60s and ’70s.

“This is a story about a relationship derailed by loss, the tenacity of love, and the path to recovery and acceptance,” said Jolie Pitt. “It has been a privilege to explore these universal human experiences with such a generous and talented cast and crew.”

“Angie and Brad have created an intimate gem of a film that will surprise people and delivers an experience they might not expect from them,” said Donna Langley, Chairman, Universal Pictures. “Universal is honored to market and distribute it to audiences around the world.”

Jolie Pitt is joined behind the scenes by a key crew that includes cinematographer Christian Berger (The White Ribbon), who used his Cine Reflect Lighting System to shoot the film; production designer Jon Hutman (Unbroken); editor Patricia Rommel (The Lives of Others); and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps). Pitt joins her in production duties, while Chris Brigham (Inception), Holly Goline (Unbroken) and Michael Vieira (Unbroken) serve as executive producers.

Here are the first images of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie at their new movie “By The Sea” and the article from EW.

*Edit*: Pictures replaced with HQ Versions

“But no man moved me till the tide / ?Went past my simple shoe /And past my apron and my belt /?And past my bodice too / And made as he would eat me up / ?As wholly as a dew…”

Whether or not this poem by Emily Dickinson, published under the title By the Sea, served as inspiration for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s new film of the same name, the spirit seems to match up with its story of a woman caught in an undertow of passion and rejuvenation while visiting a seaside village with her husband.

By the Sea is the first onscreen collaboration between the newlyweds since they first met on 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Jolie not only stars but also wrote the screenplay and is directing and producing. Along with these exclusive images, Entertainment Weekly has the first details of the romantic drama, which has been kept under wraps until now.

Although Pitt and Jolie just tied the knot themselves on Aug. 23 after a nearly decade-long relationship, this is how they’ll be spending their honeymoon—exploring a marriage that’s collapsing on itself.

Set in France during the mid-1970s, Jolie plays Vanessa, a former dancer, and Pitt is her husband Roland, an American writer. As they travel the country together, they seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café-keeper (War Horse and A Prophet‘s Niels Arestrup, pictured below) and hotel owner (Richard Bohringer, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover.)

“I chose to set By the Sea in the 1970s, not only because it is a colorful and alluring era, but because it removes many of the distractions of contemporary life and allows the focus to remain squarely on the emotions that the characters experience in their journey,” Jolie said in a statement to EW.

In other words, it was a time when it was still possible to escape your everyday life without so many methods of staying connected or distracted. In this story, she says a different kind of social networking takes place.

As a kind of found-family is assembled amid these maritime dwellers, histories are shared—some joyful, some mournful—and the couple are swept up in their stories, changing the way they look at each other.

The film will be Jolie’s follow-up to the World War II-era survival drama Unbroken, due in theaters Dec. 25, and will be her third directing project since her debut with 2011’s In the Land of Blood and Honey.

Universal Pictures will release the film, although no date has been set, and studio chairman Donna Langley said she signed on to make By the Sea after finding Jolie’s script so provocative. “I was struck by the fact that she and Brad are willing to bring such a brave endeavor to screen and take audiences on this raw, emotional journey that’s simultaneously of its moment and surprisingly timeless,” she said.

Pitt will be co-producing the film with Jolie, and among the film’s other crew will be editor Patricia Rommel (The Lives of Others); production designer Jon Hutman (Unbroken); and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps). The executive producers are Chris Brigham (Inception), Holly Goline (Unbroken) and Michael Vieira (Unbroken).

Cinematographer Christian Berger, an Oscar nominee for Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon, said he will be employing mostly natural light for By the Sea, using the Cine Reflect Lighting System he developed to channel existing light using a series of reflectors that create a warmer, less distracting environment. “It changes the method of working on set for the director and the actors, and in this film enhances the period and atmosphere,” he told EW.

The film began shooting in Malta on Sept. 8, and will continue through mid-November.

And the shooting of By The Sea begins! Via THR:

Mgarr-ix Xini beach in Gozo was closed to the public Sunday for filming of Brangelina’s first movie together since ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’

Angelina Jolie’s By the Sea will start shooting today on a picturesque beach in Malta, reports The Malta Independent.

The film written and directed by Jolie and starring partner Brad Pitt is set to shoot at Mgarr ix-Xini beach on Gozo, Malta’s second largest island. The beach was closed to the public Sunday for filming, running through Nov. 10 this year. The Malta Independent says that set construction is well underway with one structure on the beach nearing completion.

By the Sea will be the first time Pitt and Jolie have appeared onscreen together since 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Universal picked up the worldwide rights to the drama, and sources close to the production told The Hollywood Reporter that a key plot detail in the film would see Pitt’s and Jolie’s characters getting married.

The film won’t be the first time Pitt has shot a movie in the Maltese Islands, as both the Greek epic Troy from 2004 and the zombie apocalypse thriller World War Z from 2013 were filmed in Malta.
